If you’ve ever watched a poker tournament either in person, or on television you’ve heard a lot of discussion about poker odds. Calculating poker odds is a key element in winning at poker, but it’s not always easy. In fact some people claim that poker is not really gambling at all because there is more skill than luck involved. If you’re looking to calculate the odds in a poker game, a lot depends on the type of game you’re playing and who you’re playing against.
For example, if you are playing a game such as Caribbean Stud Poker where you’re playing against the house you can be sure that the overall poker odds are always in favor of the house. On the other hand in a game like Texas Hold’em you’re up against other players and the overall poker odds for each player are the same. So in that game the player needs to calculate the odds of winning each hand. Sometimes that can be easy to do. If you start off your hand with an Ace and King of the same suit you know you have a reasonably good chance of getting additional cards to help your hand so it’s worth at least seeing a three card flop.
However, if your first two hole cards on the poker tables are a seven and a deuce you should fold because the odds of winning with those cards are among the worst. If you’re serious about playing poker and calculating poker odds there are many professionals that have published books or articles that can help. Don’t rely on luck alone. Always trust the odds.
